Directors Letter

Dear Friends, Supporters, and Champions of Recovery,

As we bid farewell to another transformative year at Recovery Cafe Orting Valley, I am filled with gratitude and awe for the incredible journey we have undertaken together. 2023 has been marked by resilience, growth, and unwavering commitment to our mission of providing a sanctuary of healing and hope for individuals on their recovery journey.

This year, our programs and initiatives expanded to meet the evolving needs of our community. We introduced new support groups, workshops, and wellness activities that have resonated deeply with our members. From circle groups to one-on-one sessions, every element of our program has contributed to the holistic approach we take towards recovery, addressing not only the challenges of addiction but also nurturing the well-being of the mind, body, and spirit.

As we reflect upon the close of another transformative year at Recovery Cafe Orting Valley, I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude and pride for the remarkable journey we have shared. In the past twelve months, our community has demonstrated unparalleled resilience, growth, and an unwavering commitment to our mission of providing a sanctuary of healing and hope for individuals on their recovery journey.

This year, we expanded and strengthened our commitment to serve individuals across the spectrum of age and circumstance through four core programs: Adult Café, Recovery Navigator Program (RNP), Orting Standing Together on Prevention (OSTOP), and the Youth and Young Adult Program (YAYA).

Adult Program: Our Adult Program continues to be the cornerstone of our services, offering a comprehensive range of support for individuals navigating the complexities of recovery. From circle group sessions tailored for veterans to a support group for people that have a loved one struggling with a life affliction. we remain committed to providing a holistic approach that addresses the multifaceted aspects of Recovery. 2023 has seen an expansion of services, ensuring that every adult member of our community has access to the resources they need on their journey to recovery. In 2023 The Adult Café released a new schedule of support groups tailored around specific aspects of Recovery. Groups included, Healthy relationships, Craft and Chat, Pride circle, Young adults group, health and wellness, game night, and Open Mic night. Our Adult Café would not be able to provide the wonderful services they provide without the love and attention to detail our café staff employ every single day.

Jenn, Heidi, Alsiha and Randi are the real reason the adult café exceeds expectations. Running an adult café is not easy, and much of the work these ladies do goes unseen; every single day the Adult Café team is prepared with a plan for the day and alternate plans in case the initial one needs adjustment. Our members feel your love and consistency.  “Thank you Ladies!

Breaking bread:  Nourishing both body and soul, our program offers hot meals to our members. This not only addresses a fundamental need but also emphasizes the care and commitment we have to their overall well-being.

Redecorated spaces now offer a more welcoming and inclusive environment for our community. We've created areas for quiet reflection, collaborative workshops, and peer support, ensuring that every individual who walks through our doors feels a sense of belonging and acceptance.

Orting Standing Together On Prevention (OSTOP): We recognize the critical role that schools play in shaping the well-being of our youth. Therefore, we are committed to maintaining a strong presence in the Orting School District. Through OSTOP, we continue to collaborate with educators, parents, and students to deliver prevention education, organize workshops, and facilitate open conversations about the challenges associated with substance misuse.

Without the relentless drive of Amber Brooks, the OSTOP program would not function. Her ability to organize and lead has established OSTOP as a tangible community prevention program that has established itself in every school in the district.

Recovery Navigator Program: The Recovery Navigator Program has been a beacon of personalized support for individuals navigating the intricate pathways of recovery. Our dedicated team of recovery navigators has worked tirelessly to guide and assist our members in accessing vital resources, making informed decisions, and overcoming obstacles on their journey. This program embodies our commitment to providing individualized care and support, recognizing that every recovery journey is unique.

Our courageous RNP case managers Alex, Tod, Alyssa, and Sika have worked tirelessly going out into the rain and whatever else mother nature has in store for them. They make connections with clients in the community, meeting them where they are at, and providing a sense of hope and tangible support to meet their needs. RNP, we salute you!

Youth and Young Adult Program: I am delighted to announce that our Youth Program has experienced remarkable growth, with an average of 12 to 17 members joining us each day. This is a testament to the need for a dedicated space for our youth to find support, connection, and understanding as they navigate the complexities of recovery. The   various initiatives within the program have played a pivotal role in creating an environment where our young members can thrive:

Youth Snack and Chat: The informal and welcoming nature of our "Snack and Chat" sessions has become a cornerstone of our program. It provides a space for our youth to connect, share experiences, and build the bonds that form the foundation of a supportive community.

Going to the Park and Taking Walks Days: Recognizing the importance of physical activity and the healing power of nature, our program includes regular outings to the park and walking days. These activities not only contribute to the well-being of our youth but also foster a sense of joy and camaraderie.

Homework Club: Education is a key component of empowerment, and our Homework Club has become a vital resource for our young members. Providing a dedicated space for academic support ensures that our youth can thrive both in their recovery and educational journeys.

Free Expression in a Safe and Loving Environment: Perhaps most importantly, our program provides a safe and loving environment where our youth can freely express themselves. This fosters a sense of acceptance and understanding, crucial elements in the journey of recovery.

A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated YAYA Program staff Gerald and Jared Goldwire who have worked to create a space that goes beyond traditional recovery support. Your commitment, compassion, and innovation have truly made a difference in the lives of our youth. The brother’s Goldwire have nurtured trusting relationships with our youth, and they are the reason we continue seeing an increase in youth attendance.

updates regarding our internal controls, including changes to our financial management practices and other measures aimed at enhancing transparency, efficiency, and accountability within our organization. As part of our ongoing commitment to operational excellence and stewardship of resources, we have implemented several key changes to strengthen our internal controls:

She does this thankless work with grace and amazing focus. Tara’s amazing contributions have directly impacted our ability to continue doing the fine work we do. Tara, you are a gem!

Special Projects:

Safe Parking: This project is a response to the pressing need for safe and secure spaces for individuals experiencing homelessness, particularly those utilizing their vehicles as a form of shelter. The Safe Parking Proposal aims to address this challenge by offering a supportive environment that goes beyond traditional housing solutions.

Key components of the Safe Parking Proposal include:

  1. Designated Safe Parking Spaces: We will collaborate with local authorities and stakeholders to designate safe parking spaces where individuals living in their cars can park overnight. These spaces will be equipped with necessary amenities to ensure a secure and supportive environment.

  2. Access to Basic Facilities: To address the basic needs of our community members, we will provide access to facilities such as restrooms, sanitation stations, and water sources. This is essential for maintaining the dignity and well-being of those utilizing the Safe Parking spaces.

  3. Community Engagement and Support Services: Our project will involve active engagement with community members living in their cars. We will offer support services such as counseling, connection to resources, and assistance in navigating the path towards stable housing and recovery.

  4. Collaboration with Local Organizations: The success of the Safe Parking Proposal relies on strong partnerships with local organizations, government agencies, and community groups. We will work collaboratively to leverage resources, share expertise, and ensure a comprehensive approach to addressing the needs of our unhoused neighbors.

  5. Volunteer and Community Involvement: We invite our community to actively participate in this initiative. Volunteer opportunities will include providing support services, organizing outreach efforts, and contributing to the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere of the Safe Parking spaces.

Grant writing: With the assembly of a leadership team, grants have become one of our top priorities to ensure we not only have ample money to continue running the business, but to also diversify our funding streams to prepare for a changing future.
